Vision for Sustainable Living in Student Housing
Empowering communities to meet needs of the current generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
Student Housing will integrate sustainability into business practices and educational programming to foster healthy environments, social justice and economic viability.
Student Housing embraces its unique access to the campus community, with the goal of increasing environmental sustainability through education and agency of residents and employees throughout the department. Together we will serve as change agents and adopt a life-time of behaviors that foster healthy environments, social justice, and economic viability.

Housing Sustainability Update:
In January and February, Student Housing installed 66 Enovative AutoHot™ demand controllers regulating hot water circulation in over 2,817 units in residential buildings in partnership with Enovative Group and SoCal Gas. Based on the CPUC’s estimated savings, this equates to roughly 64,791 therms of natural gas and 76,000 kilowatt hours saved annually or 396.4 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions (CO2e).
This On Demand Efficiency (ODE) program serves large residential buildings that operate with a central boiler or commercial water heater. The program offered an instant rebate (saving money!) for the purchase and installation of a demand controller system. This system reduces heat energy losses while providing fast hot water delivery to residents.
The reduction of 396.4 metric tons of CO2e is equivalent to the removal of 83 cars from the road for one year, or the total amount of energy consumed by 36 homes in one year.
Campus Sustainability Highlights
In 2015, UCI placed 1st in the UC Cool Campus Challenge and was named Sierra Club's #1 Cool School in the U.S.
UC Irvine has the highest waste diversion rate of all UC's, at 83%, and we're on track to meet the "zero waste" goal by 2020.
The campus has expanded on-site renewable energy, hosting a 19 megawatt cogeneration power plant and 11,700 solar panels that generate up to 3.2 megawatts of power, the amount needed to meet the electrical needs of 1,800 homes.
Twenty buildings on campus are rated LEED Platinum or Gold for their energy efficiency.
Residential dining facilities are all zero-waste - donating, recycling, and composting unconsumed resources.
Over 200 faculty members provide instruction on topics relating to climate change and sustainability, preparing students to become the sustainability leaders of tomorrow.
UCI boasts more than 25 student centered organizations or programs working on peer-to-peer sustainability themed outreach and education.
